Oslo

From the 8th to the 11th century, the Vikings started their journey from their over-populated fjords across Europe, looking for land and trade. Discover their amazing history during your visit to the Bygdoy Peninsula, home to three famous museums honouring the rich nautical heritage of the Norse race and its warrior ancestors. Wander the Viking Ship Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Fram Polar Ship. Fram is the strongest wooden ship ever built and still holds the records for sailing farthest north and farthest south. Step on board the ship and see how the crew managed to survive in the coldest and most dangerous places on earth, the Arctic and Antarctica.

The gateway to the Russian Arctic and lying in the land of the Midnight Sun, Murmansk bustles with the energy of a growing port. This is the largest Russian seaport on the Arctic Ocean with a rich naval and military history. In World War II, Murmansk hosted allied convoys while during the Cold War the port was the centre of the Soviet icebreaker and submarine activity.

Explore this previously ‘top-secret’ city. Visit Aloysha, the towering Soviet monument to the Arctic defenders and the Church-of-the-Saviour-on-Waters.

Day 11
Kola Peninsula

Along the Barents Sea hardy tundra features shrubs, mosses and the last of summer’s wildflowers. Enter the White Sea and explore the area where from the 12th century onwards the Pomor founded settlements. These supreme Arctic sailors relied on boat building and hunting to survive. The tides and weather dictate landings and your experienced Captain and Discovery Team will use their expertise to design your voyage from day to day. This area is strictly controlled and visits aren't confirmed or assured.
Discovery: Pending permission, take Scenic Discovery excursions by Zodiac, kayak and nature walks. Visit isolated Pomor villages to see weathered, wooden houses. Hike across mineral-rich tundra studded with semi-precious stones. Board the Zodiacs to see kittiwake, guillemot and other bird colonies.

Solovetsky Islands

Hauntingly beautiful, the World Heritage-listed Solovetsky Archipelago stretches across Onega Bay. Rare bird species, including the whooper swan, merlin and marsh harrier, are just some of the 190 migrating summer species. The impressive Solovetsky Monastery and Fortress was founded in 1436. The collection of ancient manuscripts draws pilgrims from around the world, while the remains of Stalin’s infamous camps of this Gulag Archipelago speak of darker times. An uneasy alliance between church and state means visits aren’t confirmed or assured.
Discovery: On your Scenic Discovery excursion, pending permission, land close beneath the monastery’s massive walls and tour the magnificent medieval towers, churches and prehistoric stone labyrinths. Paddle a kayak through the forest-bound lakes via interlinking channels, some dating back centuries, or take a birdwatching and nature walk to spot some of the many migrating species.
