24 Hours in Paris - City Guide

On the banks of the Seine River, the ‘City of Light’ is revered as one of the most romantic, cosmopolitan and glamorous in all of Europe. Read on to see how you can experience a memorable day in beautiful Paris before or after a Scenic luxury river cruise.
During a 5-star luxury Scenic river cruise, a highlight for many during the 11-Day Normandy & Gems of the Seine itinerary will be their days spent exploring the art, character, history, style, and, of course, the cuisine of Paris where the cruise begins and ends. In fact, many choose to extend their stay in Paris before their river cruise to explore a little more, with the 3-day Highlights of Paris City Stay.
Here’s how you might spend an extraordinary 24 hours in Paris when cruising with Scenic.

Rise on day one of your Normandy & Gems of the Seine river cruise to a full day in Paris, with a freshly prepared coffee, tea or juice delivered to your luxury suite on the award-winning Scenic Gem by your butler. Head to the Sun Deck to watch the sun rise over the city and its landmark Eiffel Tower during a guided morning yoga class. If yoga is not your natural calling, why not unwind in the state-of-the-art gym? Alternatively, do as the French do and savour a pain au chocolat at the River Café, which opens from 6:30am each day.

With your appetite satisfied and the anticipation of stepping ashore into Paris, it’s time to say au revoir to Scenic Gem for the day as you join your selected Scenic Freechoice activity. You may opt to walk through the edgy and festive Marais district in the 4th arrondissement, exploring the splendid galleries and boutiques that line its cobblestone streets. Or, see the elegant and grassy Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris.
Alternatively, take a guided tour of the incredible Opera Garnier, built for the Paris Opera House between 1861 and 1875. Garden and history lovers may wish to visit the 17th century Baroque estate Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte by André Le Nôtre, gardener of King Louis XIV. This masterpiece expression of the jardin à la française, the French aesthetic of formal gardens that swept Europe in the 17th century, was the inspiration for the Palace of Versailles.

Late Morning

The spirit of French joie de vivre, 'the joy of living', is the very essence of life in Paris. You’ll find it in the aromas wafting from a boulangerie of freshly baked, buttery croissants and brioches. Walk the tree-lined footpaths of ceremonial streets such as The Avenue des Champs-Élysées or cross one of its 37 bridges joining the left and right bank of the Seine River, including the ornate, gilt-decorated Pont Alexandre III bridge, built between 1896 and 1900 and referred to as the most beautiful bridge in the world.
Almost everyone who visits and spends time in Paris, always manages to fall in love with the city, considered the cultural heartbeat of France.

Back on board your Scenic Space-Ship, enjoy an à la carte lunch in the Crystal Dining Room, where a cornucopia of choice is on offer as your inspired chefs craft delectable dishes using fresh local ingredients. Sip on fine regional wines to compliment your dishes as you overlook Paris, knowing that Scenic’s truly all-inclusive philosophy ensures everything is covered.
Alternatively, you may wish to stay on in the city to enjoy lunch at a local French café, restaurant or classic bistro.  Be spoilt for choice when finding somewhere tempting to eat in Paris. Perhaps visit the gourmet region of Montmartre on the right bank of the Seine, visiting its chocolatiers, fromageries, wine taverns and bistros. Or, meander the left bank where you can wander the famous food market Marché Raspail in the 6th arrondissement.

If time permits, explore more of the numerous attractions in Paris independently. Visit the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte and explore the military history of France at Les Invalides. Visit the Musee d’Orsay in a former railway station, housing prized French art from 1848-1915.
Wander the famous department stores such as Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann in an Art Nouveau building; and the premium Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche – the first department store in the world, founded in 1852. Close by, try the mind-blowing gourmet food emporium, La Grande Épicerie de Paris, a must for food lovers.
Return to your Space-Ship, enjoy an aperitif in the Panorama Lounge or relax in your own Scenic Sun Lounge, where luxury and innovation meet.

Perhaps tonight is your night to take up your invitation to dine at L’Amour restaurant in an intimate setting. Alternatively, indulge in the Crystal Dining Room with an exquisite five course à la carte dinner.
If you prefer, you may want to explore Paris by night – perhaps stopping to enjoy one of the many wine bars. Your Cruise Director can assist you with restaurant suggestions and reservations – perhaps at the Brasserie on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower; at Georges Restaurant on the top floor of the Pompidou Centre with panoramic views; or dine at Le Grand Colbert restaurant in a 17th century building, where Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves shared a meal in a scene during the 2003 film Something’s Got to Give.
Relax in Scenic Gem's Panorama Lounge and raise a glass to an incredible day in Paris – perhaps with a French cognac or champagne with friends, or from the comfort of your luxurious suite.
Say bon soir to the City of Light as you reflect on a day of Parisian adventure and recline for a restful sleep.
