5 breath-taking Game of Thrones set locations you can visit

Game of Thrones has finally concluded its narrative, and while there aren’t any spoilers to be found here, many of the show's die-hard fans will no-doubt be slightly saddened that their favourite TV series is no more. But fear not, you haven’t experienced Game of Thrones until you’ve visited its breath-taking locations.

Luckily, our Scenic Eclipse 6-star ocean cruises take you to all four corners of Westeros in the Seven Kingdoms. Okay, so maybe it doesn’t take you there, but it takes you to some of the real-world locations where those places were filmed.

From the sun-kissed scenes at King’s Landing in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to the icy plains of Akureyri, Iceland, Scenic Eclipse, the World’s First Discovery Yacht, will take you back to those iconic moments that Game of Thrones fans live for.

King's Landing, Dubrovnik, Croatia

King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, could possibly be the number one destination Game of Thrones fan wish to visit. It’s also Dubrovnik in Croatia, which is home to the renowned UNESCO World Heritage site of the city’s old town, where travellers can experience first-hand the awe-inspiring, beautifully-preserved medieval city.

With ramparts and sections of the walls dating back to the 11th century, it’s no wonder it was chosen as a prime spot to shoot as the famed King’s Landing. Once you’ve taken in the surroundings and imagined yourself as a warrior making their pilgrimage to the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, you can enjoy the rest of the activities on offer here, such as sitting back in the sun-lit terrace of a café as you sip a fresh coffee, shopping in the markets and bazaars and strolling down the streets that have seen enough history to tell a thousand tales.

Gateway to the House of the Undying, Dubrovnik,Croatia

For those not familiar, the House of the Undying, could easily sound like somewhere you really wouldn’t want to visit. However, as an eager Game of Thrones fan, you’ll know that this particular location in Qarth is iconic. As headquarters of the Warlocks of Qarth, the House of the Undying carries with it a sense of intrigue and enigma, so why wouldn’t you visit it if you had the chance?

Also in Dubrovnik, if you find yourself in the region on one of our luxury Mediterranean cruises, then we recommend a trip to see the impressive Minceta Tower (which is the impressive structure’s real name, sorry fans), where you can enjoy the view at the city wall’s highest point, marvelling at your kingdom, sorry, the city below. Built in 1319, the Minceta Tower stands to this day in fantastic condition, where it has been well-looked after and maintained for the past seven hundred years or so.

Underground passageways in Meereen, Split, Croatia

From Dubrovnik, head three hours north and you’ll find yourself at the stunning hotspot of Split. Palm trees line the crisp, clear waterfront at the harbour, distinct, orange-hued rooftops punctuate the landscape and the unmistakably-outstanding architectural arrangement of the Roman Diocletian's Palace, built for the emperor of the same name, stands proud.

But there is more than meets the eye at this UNESCO Heritage site, if you head south (literally - underground), you’ll find that another level to the palace opens up, and underneath the emperor’s palace is a complex system of substructures that were once used as a storage facility in Roman times. Beyond this, later on in the 6th and 7th centuries, these underground tunnels were used as permanent homes. Again, fans of Game of Thrones will recognize this area as the underground passageways in Meereen – a must-see!

Lava formations at Dimmuborgir and Dettifoss Waterfall, Northern Iceland

If you’re more inclined to enjoy a colder climate, then an ocean cruise to crisp, clear, Iceland is sure to satisfy the senses and your thirst for all things Game of Thrones.

At Dimmuborgir, you’ll find a naturally beautiful, yet other-worldly lava sculpture park. With the dried, post-molten rock creating formations that exude a mysterious and sinister undertone, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were about to encounter a White Walker at any minute. But fear not, outside of filming hours, Dimmuborgir is simply another one of Northern Iceland’s beautiful natural environments.

Also in the north, you can experience the sheer power of the Dettifoss Waterfall, as it crashes around the stunning region of Mývatn.

Mýrdalsjökull glacier near Iceland’s south coast

The Mýrdalsjökull glacier is located in the Höfðabrekkuheiði hiking area, and was used in Game of Thrones to become the frozen, harsh, winter landscapes that represent what lies beyond the wall. If you’ve ever wondered just where that icy, uncompromising environment exists, then it’s right here, in Höfðabrekkuheiði, not far from Iceland’s southern coast.

Again, with modern, insulated clothing, a qualified tour guide and no White Walkers in sight, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier is a breath-taking-yet-safe natural landscape, that must simply be seen to be believed.

With towering, sheer-white formations that climb up towards the clouds, you’ll feel as if you’re in another world, one that isn’t constricted by time or place. For complete and utter silence and tranquility, Höfðabrekkuheiði is a must-see.

Again, Scenic Eclipse’s Iceland Discovery will take you to this mesmerizing destination that you can hardly believe exists here on planet Earth.
