Our Salt Therapy Room

Salt Therapy has been used for centuries to heal mind, body and soul. Here is why Scenic became the first Europe river cruise ship to add a luxury salt therapy room to our fleet.
Salt therapy is now one of the most popular treatments in the wellness world. Salt therapy rooms are hardly new, however, with a rich history that spans back to medieval times. Salt therapy has many benefits, relieving symptoms of skin, respiratory and lifestyle conditions.

It is why Scenic became the first and only river cruise operator to offer on board Salt Therapy Lounges. Each salt therapy room is indulgent in design but combines a salt system that has been used since the 1800s. Salt therapy will help you feel relax, rejuvenated and clear your airways, especially after a long flight.

On our Scenic Space-Ships cruising the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers, plus the Bordeaux and South of France waterways, these wellness rooms are lined with handcrafted salt bricks which are set to the perfect temperature and humidity to mimic natural salt caves.

Using pharmaceutical-grade dry salt, microscopic salt particles land on the skin and are breathed into the lungs, unlocking its unrivalled benefits.

What is Salt Therapy?

Salt therapy is exactly what it sounds like: healing therapy using mineral salts. It’s said to have been used since medieval times, but the benefits of salt therapy were only truly discovered in the 1800s when miners in Eastern Europe emerged from salt mines with glowing skin and clear lungs.

A Polish doctor, Feliks Boczkowski, discovered the unique benefits of salt therapy, and opened the first salt-based healing centre in a salt mine near Krakow, Poland. Over the years, more doctors noticed the benefits of salt therapy rooms, and more healing centres were created across Europe and the world

What is a Salt Therapy Room?

Nowadays, you certainly don’t need to find your nearest salt mine to experience the health benefits. Man-made salt caves are chic, spa-like rooms with comfortable chairs, walls made from salt-bricks and the floor scattered with crystals of the healing mineral.

On a Scenic 5-star luxury river cruise, the Salt Therapy Lounge accommodates two guests at a time and is the perfect space to revitalise after a long flight, for a moment of solitude or relax with a book after a busy day of exploring onshore.

How Does Salt Therapy Work?

Salt therapy has been linked to many health benefits - everything from boosting your immune system to enhancing your sleep. Salt therapy can be thought of as a deep clean for your airways. As you breathe in the salt particles in the air of the room, they’ll enter your respiratory system and absorb anything that shouldn’t be there, like pollutants, irritants and toxins.
The salt also acts as an anti-inflammatory, so you’ll leave the room breathing easier. It’s also said to relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis and the common cold. It’s not just the airways that benefit from salt’s deep cleaning abilities, the skin does, too. Skin conditions like eczema, rosacea and psoriasis are all said to benefit from salt therapy. Those without a skin condition report leaving salt therapy rooms with a healthy glow.
Salt therapy is just one of the all-inclusive Health & Wellbeing amenities on board our 5-star Space-Ships. From yoga classes on the Sun Deck to e-bikes, a state-of-the-art gym and activities with a wellbeing coach, there’s always a way to add wellness to your day. We would however, recommend you add a little salt therapy to each of your days on board.
