Mysterious West Papua

Exotic and diverse, West Papua is the home to cerulean seas, remote tribes, and incredible wildlife and marine life. A land steeped in history, culture and tradition, this voyage will explore rarely visited volcanic islands strewn across pristine waters well beyond the tourist trail.
An exotic experience of a lifetime, this two-week expedition takes the incredibly scenic route from Indonesia to Australia. Explore the most diverse marine region in the world, Raja Ampat; the Great Barrier Reef’s Lizard Island; and the far north Queensland home of Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders, Thursday Island. Sprinkle in a few Spice Islands to trace the history of this fascinating region, which also offers plenty of opportunities for snorkelling, diving and hiking into steamy jungles in search of rare and endangered birdlife.

  8. Day 8 - Banda Island

At the focal point of Indonesia’s Spice Islands, Banda was prized by European, Arab and Chinese traders until the late 1800s. It was so valuable that in 1667, Holland traded New Amsterdam (now known as Manhattan) to the British for Run Island, one of the smallest in the group. Banda Neira has a nutmeg plantation and a museum. This is also a unique place to snorkel and dive on a coral-encrusted lava flow, created by the still-active volcano Gunung Api.

  11. Day 11 - Thursday Island, Australia

Thursday Island, in the Torres Strait, lies between Papua New Guinea and the northern tip of Queensland. With its deep anchorage, it became an important port in 1875, three years after the Queensland Government unlawfully annexed most of the Torres Strait islands for defence purposes and to protect British shipping interests. Today, Thursday Island is the administrative centre of all the Australian islands between Cape York and the New Guinea mainland. Almost 70 percent of the population of 3,000 are Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders. See the cannons at Green Hill Fort, where underground tunnels house the Torres Strait Historical Museum, and Gab Titui Cultural Centre, which exhibits historical artefacts and contemporary Indigenous art.

  13. Day 13 - Lizard Island

One of the most gorgeous spots on the Queensland coast is best viewed from the top of its highest peak, Cook’s Look. If the hike is too strenuous, enjoy swimming, snorkelling or walking on the sandy beach. Depending on availability, we may be invited to visit the Lizard Island Research Station, dedicated to help understand and preserve the Great Barrier Reef.

    Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
