Discover Scandinavia

Scandinavian countries routinely rank amongst the top ten happiest countries in the world. With the perfect medley of some of the most stunning and unspoilt natural landscapes, purest air, a proud heritage, and chic, cosmopolitan cities, this is scarcely surprising. Discover the hidden treasures of some of the prettiest capital cities of the world, or follow in the footsteps of the Vikings as you unravel the wonders of Scandinavia.

Spectacular Scandinavia

Scandinavia is more than a region, it’s a state of mind. Elegant and composed, it values great beauty and deep traditions. Its stylish cities are abundant with trendy cafés and shopping areas, and are a perfect mix of history and tradition with an affluent and modern influence. Be immersed in unspoilt wild terrain, ice-blue fjords, majestic mountains and glaciers, thunderous waterfalls and green pine forests – you’ll agree that Scandinavia is simply spectacular.

Art and culture

With a proud Viking heritage, modern architecture, world-famous artists, and the best museums, Scandinavia is a melting pot of art and culture. Oslo’s Munch Museum is dedicated to the works of the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. The Oslo Opera House is renowned for its remarkable angular architecture, and the city’s Viking Ship Museum is home to some of the world’s best-preserved Viking ships and artefacts.

From the incredibly ornate Christiansborg Palace, to the Renaissance era Rosenborg Castle, home to the royal crown jewels and art collection, the glorious castles of Copenhagen are every fairy tale lover’s paradise. Amongst Stockholm’s many architectural wonders, the City Hall, built from 8 million bricks, and boasting a 100-metre tall bell tower with Sweden’s emblem, is a prime example of national romanticism in architecture.

Discover Iceland

Enter the land that is almost too magical to be true – an extraordinary land peppered with waterfalls, volcanoes, lava fields, geysers, geothermal pools, black sand beaches, mountains, fjords, dancing aurora lights, and Europe’s largest glacier. Here, trolls and elves are not mere ancient mythical beings, they are an intrinsic part of Icelandic culture, and traces of Viking heritage are evident in everyday life

The Golden Circle

The most sought after route to explore Iceland, the Golden Circle covers the three most iconic attractions of the country – the Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir Geothermal Area. Also along the way are several other lesser known, breathtaking wonders.
Thingvellir National Park is a place of geological, historical and cultural significance to Icelanders. The first Althing (the Icelandic parliament) session was held here in 930 AD. This is where the country declared its independence from Denmark in 1944, and the national park is the fascinating site of the continental drift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
The Golden Circle route gets its name from the Gullfoss Waterfall, Icelandic for Golden Waterfall. A walk along a narrow track offers spectacular close-up views of the two-tiered waterfall below. In sunny summer months, you can see a rainbow form across the cascading glacial waters, while during the winter months, the water freezes into undulating glassy waves.
The nearly 3km wide geothermal field of Geysir Geothermal Area is home to the highly active Strokkur geyser which sprouts hot scalding water 100 feet into the air every 5-10 minutes. The original ‘Great Geysir’, which lends its name to all the ‘geysers’ of the world, was known to hurl water over 200 feet into the air before it became dormant. Today, the 60 feet wide hole of The Great Geysir quietly steams.

Discover Alaska

Fully escorted by Scenic Tour Directors, every cruise offers guests the chance to experience remote areas of natural beauty not normally accessible to tourists. Beverages, meals, shore excursions, naturalist guides and activities are included in each cruise.

The Centrepiece of Alaska – Denali National Park

Surrounded by mountains, glaciers, wild rivers, boreal forest and Arctic tundra, perpetually snowcapped Denali National Park was established to protect the wilderness. Nothing more alluring than what is found in the shadow of North America’s highest peak – the 6,190m Denali – the focus of our specially curated land journey, Wilds of Alaska.

Alaskan Discovery

A tiny hamlet in the Mat-Su Valley, Talkeetna is home to incredible nature adventures and one of perfect places to view the spectacular Denali. It retains its early Alaska feel, with log cabins, historic buildings, colourful locals and wild west storefronts. Here you will soar into the heart of Denali National Park and fly among some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain landscapes in the world, watching for moose, black bears, Dall sheep and mountain goats, landing high on a glacier for a treasured walk

Alaskan Huskies

No Alaskan journey would be complete without dog sledding and few ‘mushers’ would be more qualified to show you the ‘ropes’ than Iditarod champion and kennel owner Vern Halter. The Iditarod is the world’s most renowned sled dog race run over a distance of 1,510km from Anchorage to Nome and Vern is a consistent top 10 finisher. Delight in an exhilarating ATV sled ride pulled by Vern’s dogs before visiting the kennel to tussle with lively puppies.

Whether it’s wildlife, wilderness, Native American culture, adrenalin-inducing whitewater or the overwhelming scale and glory of Denali, one week’s journey into the heart of Alaska will recharge your spirit and feed your soul.

Discover Japan

From its ancient Samurai culture to present-day Japanese anime, the ‘land of the rising sun’ has always had its own unmistakable identity. You’ll find that same element of uniqueness in everything you come across in this proud and distinctive country, whether it’s glittering skyscrapers or ancient temples, snow-capped peaks or state-of-the-art entertainment complexes.

The essence of modernity

Explore the bright lights of Osaka and Tokyo – the world’s most populated city – and marvel at the innovative technologies that distinguish them and Japan’s other modern meccas. Marvel at magnificent skyscrapers, travel on bullet trains that are the envy of the world, visit factories that set global standards for innovation and productivity, and retail precinct that offer every modern wonder imaginable.

A place with history and spirit

Discover a land where Samurai are still revered, not just in traditional corners, but in powerful corporations and bustling modern marketplaces. Delight in the
simplicity of beautiful temples and serene gardens. Encounter authentic Geishas and Maikos (apprentice Geishas) and learn to master the art of Taiko drumming and handcrafting sushi. You’ll get to learn about sumo wrestling and the Samurai, and bow before ancient shrines. Japan is a land of spirituality and tradition, and you’ll have every opportunity to embrace it all.

Japanese traditional dress

Traditionally, Japanese men and women wore the kimono, the style of which has changed little since the Edo period. Still worn on formal occasions and festivals, it is likely you will see both women and men wearing either formal (montsuki) or lightweight summer (yukata) kimono during your stay. Try wearing a kimono during your Scenic Enrich experience in Kyoto.
